2001 goodwill games brisbane

Joanna Jordan was appointed as
Manager – Special Events for the 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane,
the international multi sport event featuring over 1300 elite athletes competing
in 14 sports. Conceived by media magnate Ted Turner in 1986 as a result of
a vision of international goodwill through world class competition, the Goodwill
Games is the most prestigious international, invitational event in the world.

As Manager – Special Events,
Joanna led a team of 13 staff and over 100 contractors to deliver the Games
special events program, her most challenging role to date.

The following events
and projects came within the scope of this senior management role:

Closing Event
Appointed as Artistic Director and Producer of the public party on the last
night of the Games. This role was responsible for the complete conceptual
planning, coordination and delivery of a 25min multi media presentation on
the Brisbane River at South Bank. Witnessed by an estimated 90,000 people,
the event incorporated an audio visual presentation on five video screens,
integrated building lighting and searchlights, two 40 watt Yag lasers, and
fireworks fired from a half a kilometre long platform on the river and city

City Lighting Concept
Appointed as Artistic Director and Producer of the largest outdoor lighting
installation ever staged in Queensland. Providing a spectacular nightly backdrop
to the Global Village (the hub of the Games) and Riverconcert series, eight
city buildings and six searchlights were controlled from one point allowing
a change of colour or a synchronised searchlight movement at a push of a button
– an Australian first.

Board Games Projection
Appointed as Artistic Director and Producer of a projection installation on
the side of the QLD Performing Arts Complex featuring iconic board games such
as Monopoly, Scrabble, Where’s Wally etc. This focus on ‘the Games’
– (but not the Goodwill Games!) was kept tightly under wraps until the first
night and was a major talking point during the event.

City Wide Beautification Program

Appointed as Project Manager of the city wide pageantry, signage, installation
and planting program. Over 18 months in the planning, the role was responsible
for the coordination of internal GWGB brand management and logistics departments,
appointed design team Dot Dash and city wide stakeholders to plan, coordinate
and deliver a million dollar beautification program.

Carlton Mid Club
Appointed as Project Manager to oversee the conceptual planning and development
of a million dollar hospitality facility for sponsors, VIPs and the corporate
community. Situated on the edge of the Brisbane River at South Bank, the facility
exceeded all expectations of Games management and guests.

Medal Ceremonies
The planning, coordination and delivery of 123 medal ceremonies across 14
sports and eight venues.

Venue Atmosphere
The development of venue entertainment to create sport specific atmosphere
across all venues.

Sports Presentation
The development of sport specific strategy’s utilising music, lighting,
commentary, video boards, announcers etc.

RED . . . Paint the Town Events

The public celebration program of the Games.

  • Riverconcert Series – eight
    concerts on the Brisbane River at South Bank featuring high profile Australian
    and international artists. Series was enjoyed by over 200,000 people
  • Queen Street Mall Program
    – daytime focus of the Games
  • Arts and Cultural Program
    – establishment of alliances with Queensland Arts and Cultural organisations
    to produce a world class program of exhibitions and performances
  • Negotiation of International
    and Australian talent – liaison with Warner Music Australia and international,
    Australian promoters and agents to develop a world class entertainment program
  • RED Hat busking program –
    international program staged over five pitches featuring the best of Australian
    and international street theatre
  • Games Time Athlete appearances
    – coordination of 175 appearances by Australian and international athletes
    at promotional and sponsor related functions
  • Fireworks Displays – coordination
    of displays at ANZ stadium and on the Brisbane River

  • Launch of 2001 Team Goodwill
    – the Games sponsorship family
  • Simultaneous ticket launches
    in Brisbane/Sydney and Melbourne
  • Champions Luncheon series
    featuring Ato Boldon and Maurice Greene
  • ForceOne Orientation – the
    mass orientation event for 3,000 volunteers, contractors and staff
  • Launch of RED . . . paint
    the town – the public Celebration program of the Games
  • 30 Days to Go Celebration
    in the Queen Street Mall

Games Time Events

  • Media Welcome Function – welcome
    party for the world’s media
  • Michael Johnson Farewell Party
    – invitation only dance party following Michael Jordan’s last professional
  • Sponsor Thank You Function
    – held at the Closing event and attended by the Premier, Ted Turner and
  • The Wrap Party – final party
    for 3,000 volunteers, contractors and staff
